There is only one official language spoken in Japan, which is of course Japanese. However, many Japanese are able to understand English since English is the second language that everyone must learn in school.
If you see small children with bright yellow baseball hats, bright yellow umbrellas, bright yellow raincoats walking in long lines around Japanese towns, these are all elementary school children. Uniforms are standard and large groups of children are frequently seen walking in pairs and holding hands as they walk to school. Japanese children begin school at six years old entering first grade. Almost all Japanese children enter at this stage, although an increasing number do experience kindergarten.
Everywhere you go, you are likely to see people of all ages reading manga (Japanese comics). Manga are so popular in Japan that they comprise about 22% of all printed materials. Manga are not always about superheroes like American comics. They can be historical, or about science, or even explaining a government regulation. Many describe the exploits of the samurai.
Very popular manga are sometimes made into anime or animated film and video games. Countries all over the world, including the United States, are adopted the manga style.
